The Netherlands cannot do much about black lists

The Antilles do no longer belong on the balck lists of tax paradises, says the Dutch state secretary of Finance, Jan Kees de Jager (CDA) in a conversation with the Wereldomroep. De Jager is currently making a tour of the Antilles and Aruba. The subject came up during his visit with finance-minister Ersilia de Lannooy (PNP).
More job cuts in London

Denton Wilde Sapte has joined the ranks of City firms launching redundancy consultations, with up to 80 jobs at risk across the firm's London and Milton Keynes offices.
The firm said that up to 40 fee earners could be laid off, with the remainder coming from other parts of the firm.

Banco Santander's US$300 million acquisition of ABN Amro's Montevideo branch has closed, creating the largest-ever private bank in Uruguay. Lawyers from Jiménez de Aréchaga, Viana & Brause - who act as both banks' regular counsel - steered the deal to a conclusion on 29 December.

Th Netherlands reacted positively on a request to try the five Somali pirates, that on high seas in the Gulf of Aden tried to hijack the ship Samanyolu that sails under the Antillean flag, in the Netherlands. Chairman of CvO, the Committee Ship’s incidents, Lex Gonzales says that by leaving it to the Netherlands to try these pirates , The Netherlands Antilles have missed a formidable opportunity judicially, economically, and publicity.
Former chief prosecutor De Wit to Antillean OM

Former chief prosecutor of the office of the public prosecutor in Amsterdam, Leo de Wit, is going to help with the reorganization of the Antillean Public prosecutor. He’s going to work as advisor for seven months on the reorganization of the OM and police in the Netherlands Antilles.
2008: Highest inflation since 1981

The Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS) reports that with 5.9 percent, the inflation in 2008 is more than double that of 2007 (3.0 percent). This is the highest inflation in Curacao since 1981, when it was as much as 12.2 percent. The CBS also measured that in December, the inflation didn’t grow as much as in the former months, namely with just 0.1 percent.
Finance-commissioner: Risks mapped

The Governing Body has tried to map as many financial risks for the island as possible with the budget of the island territory of Curacao, says Commissioner Mike Willem (PAR) in a reaction on reports in the local media that the College financial supervision (Cft) is worried about the financial risks and that the budget won’t get a positive advice.

Committee buckles down to the parking of not-carried over tasks

A small committee with members from the Netherlands and the Land Netherlands Antilles must come at the end of this month with a proposal on where to park the tasks that are not yet carried over to the new entities at the time of the official commencement of the new political status and the dismantling of the Land Netherlands Antilles.

Velcro stock buyback proposed

Velcro Industries NV is offering to buy back all of its remaining stock for $21 per share, the company announced Thursday. About 95 percent of the company is owned by Cohere Limited, which instituted proceedings last September in the Netherlands Antilles, where the company is headquartered, to acquire the remaining 5 percent for the same price.
Cft: Pension scheme reform national civil servants point of interest

The College financial supervision (Cft) reported on the 2009 budget of the Land Netherlands Antilles this week. The Cft decided that the budget meets the standards to a satisfactory extent, but that a number of issues need to be improved. The most important point of interest is the intended reformation of the pension scheme for national civil servants.

Kernonderdelen daarvan zijn dus gehoorzaamheid aan de hoogste wet en eerbied voor de rechterlijke autoriteiten.

The Netherlands Antilles continue their course for entering treaties with well-chosen countries to prevent double taxation. Especially the Caribbean region receives great attention. State secretary Alex Rosaria (Finance, PNP) emphasizes that the Antilles are in the first place Caribbean and must optimally cooperate with Caribbean nations for their (financial-social) survival.
Cft complete for the first time early February

The College financial supervision (Cft) will meet for the first time in a complete composition in the beginning of February. One member for Curacao, register accountant Ivan de Windt, and one for St. Maarten, Roland Tuitt was appointed last week. The Cft is now complete with these two members.
