The Council of Ministers for the Kingdom has agreed today to nominate C.F. Mewe (43) and J. Röben (62) for appointment as respectively member and ad interim member of the Joint Court of Appeal of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.
Lai Promes new registrar of Parliament

Desiree Lai-Promes (45) was elected by Parliament as the new registrar of the national parliament. Lai Promes was appointed as substitute-registrar in February of 2006 and was the official registrar since August.

Council approves the concepts of the consensus-statute laws

The Island Council has approved the concepts consensus-statute laws Financial Supervision and Police Curaçao, St. Maarten, and Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba in a debate that lasted for hours and gives a look ahead at the coming campaign on the way to the referendum to be held on the political future of Curacao.

For more than a year the island of Curacao, now part of the Netherlands Antilles, is preparing itself for an autonomous status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In the weeks to come the government of the Netherlands Antilles will be informing the public on the relevant agreements between the partners in the Kingdom on this issue and the underlying reasons to enter into such agreements. Because soon (expected already in April 2009) a referendum will be held. This first information page is an introduction of the Kingdom agreements on the constitutional future of Curaçao.

Financial restructuring of Land has started

The Dutch State Secretary Ank Bijleveld-Schouten (Kingdom Relations, CDA) has ordered the start of the Antillean financial restructuring scheme. The ministry of Homeland Affairs and Kingdom Relations has meanwhile ordered to deposit 98.4 million guilders in an account of the Bank of the Netherlands Antilles (BNA).

Hans Mos resigns his position as Chief Public Prosecutor. As a result of the statements in the leaked-out VNO-report, Justice-minister Rudy Croes has supposedly ordered him and also prosecutor Kasper van der Schaft to leave.
Dutch Public Prosecutor investigates possible abuses in appeal

The Dutch National Police Internal Investigations Department is starting an investigation by order of the Public Prosecutor in Leeuwarden into possible abuse in the filing of appeal. This was announced by the Public Prosecutor last friday. Data of acts for the registration of appeal could possibly have been forged by the Registry of the Court in Leeuwarden. The matter came out through a sentence of the Court in Leeuwarden last week. It appeared that a date of an appeal had been adjusted, so that it would still be within the set time.
Busy time for new member Cft Ivan de Windt

The College financial supervision held for the first time a press conference in her total capacity yesterday. The members nominated by St. Maarten and Curacao (respectively Roland Tuitt and Ivan de Windt) were recently appointed after the Order in Council for the Kingdom temporary financial supervision was established in November for these future countries.

A 5.5; that is the report mark that the chairman of the College financial supervision (Cft) Hans Weitenberg would give for the budget that Curacao submitted to the college. Near satisfactory, but rounded down. “In view of our own credibility, we must be strict.”
Cft budget 2009 does not meet criterion

The budget of Curacao for 2009 does not unconditionally meet the criterion set in the Order in Council for the Kingdom (AMvRB). This is stated in the advice that the Council of financial supervision (Cft) sent to the Governing Body (BC) this morning. The Cft urges the BC to come with a concrete plan in order to meet these conditions.
Harvard students plead for "yes"

After extensive examination of the political reforms, two students of the American Harvard University, Jeremias Prassl and Ben Gardner, are of the opinion that during the referendum one has to give the green light for the package that has been negotiated. On Wednesday they made their conclusions public in a lecture at the UNA (University of the Netherlands Antilles). Last night they gave a presentation entitled “Curacao, the Netherlands Antilles and the Kingdom: A look through the constitutional prism”, which took place for invitees of the law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne. The two students crossed the entire island in the past two weeks and spoke with all important parties about renewals. They held in-depth interviews with a total of over forty people.
Redundancy arrangement for Giskus rejected

The Common Court of Justice of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba has rejected a petition of Jopie Giskus for reversal of the decision of the Court of Justice of 6 June 2006. It is a decision in which the Court of Justice did not decide in Giskus’ favor to obtain a contractual redundancy arrangement from his former employer Bonaire Management Group N.V. (BMG).
Registration for elections European Parliament has started

All Dutch citizens living in the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba are for the first time allowed to vote for the European Parliament on June 4, 2009. The amendment took place last year after a judicial procedure of the Arubans Mike Eman and Benny Sevinger. In order to vote, voters must register first and they can do this till April 22.

The Netherlands takes the pirates" trial over from the Antilles

The Netherlands has agreed to a request from the Antilles to trial the five Somalis that tried to hijack the freighter Samanyolu that sails under the Antillean flag, in the Netherlands. Justice-minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin (CDA) has meanwhile asked Denmark to extradite the hijackers.
