Joop heeft een magere markante kop en lijkt sprekend op M.C. Escher, de wereldberoemde Nederlandse grafische kunstenaar. Ik laat hem een zelfportret van Escher zien. Komdeur herkent zichzelf in die tekening. Hij vindt het leuk om de gelijkenis te zien. “Alleen mijn neus is niet zo krom!”

De voormalige minister-president van de Nederlandse Antillen, Don Martina, beschuldigt Nederland van het schenden van mensenrechten, omdat Nederland zou hebben gedreigd de schuldsanering stop te zetten als “NO” bij het op 15 mei 2009 te houden referendum zou winnen. Hij beroept zich in dat verband op VN Resolutie 2625 (XXV): “Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations“.

Het doet mij deugd dat de heer Don Martina op mijn opiniestuk heeft gereageerd in het Antilliaans Dagblad van 11 mei 2009 (klik hier en hier). Ik zal zijn reactie puntsgewijs bespreken.

The law firm VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne opens its doors in Bonaire in June 2009. The island of Bonaire, now still part of the Netherlands Antilles, but shortly a municipal of the Netherlands (BES), will thus be the first full service Netherlands Caribbean law firm, according to VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne.
Trade, education, and customs: Treaties with Jamaica

A delegation of the Netherlands Antilles will go to Jamaica next week for further negotiations regarding a treaty to avoid double taxation between the two countries. A Jamaican delegation visited Curaçao in January regarding the so-called Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTTA).

Eric de Brabander meets Erich Zielinski

Curacao Legal Portal zal vanaf heden een serie interviews met bekende advocaten van de Nederlandse Antillen publiceren. Het eerste interview in deze serie is met Erich Zielinski.
Erich Zielinski, geboren op Bonaire, is sedert enkele decennia als advocaat op Curacao gevestigd en onder meer een van de oprichters van de Orde van Advocaten. Recentelijk heeft hij eveneens naam gemaakt als schrijver van literaire romans die zich veelal afspelen op de Antillen.
Curacao Legal Portal heeft de bekende Curaçaose tandarts Eric de Brabander bereid gevonden het interview met Erich Zielinski af te nemen.

Mijn meest spectaculaire zaak?
Nou Eric, ik zal met de deur in huis vallen. Dat moet de strafzaak tegen de bode van de Centrale Bank geweest zijn.
Erich Zielinski gaat er even gemakkelijk voor zitten. Hij is een grote krachtige man met een stentorstem, die hem in de rechtszaal goede diensten moet hebben bewezen.
PwC: "We have nothing to do with Madoff"

The Antillean branch of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) explicitly states that they have nothing to do with the Madoff issue. The name of the company was connected to the American swindler, last Monday. Nevertheless, it concerns PwC in Canada and the Netherlands.

Nog vijf weken te gaan tot aan het referendum van 15 mei 2009 op Curaçao. De strijd tussen JA en NEE is in volle omvang losgebarsten. De gemoederen lopen hoog op en de voorstanders van ieder der opties laten geen middel ongeroerd de burgerij op Curaçao voor hun kamp te winnen. Er staat immers een hoop op het spel: onze toekomst.
VOORGESTELDE AANWIJZINGSBEVOEGDHEID VAN DE BAAN!

Het bestuur van de Orde van Advocaten Curaçao heeft in een brief van 9 januari 2009 aan de Raad van State van het Koninkrijk ernstige bezwaren naar voren gebracht tegen de voorgestelde aanwijzingsbevoegdheid van de Nederlandse Minister van Justitie in zijn hoedanigheid van lid van de Raad van Ministers van het Koninkrijk. De voorgestelde regeling ging veel verder dan de aanwijzingsbevoegdheid die al sinds jaar en dag in het Statuut is opgenomen. De Raad van State heeft een negatief advies over de voorgestelde aanwijzingsbevoegdheid naar de Koninkrijksregering gestuurd.
