The Courts of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has again adjourned the hearing of Churandy Martina’s disqualification on the Olympic 200 meter. The hearing in the Swiss Lausanne will now take place on January 15, 2009.
Columbus is tired of waiting for concession

International cable company Columbus is threatening with legal proceedings if his request for a concession for its subsidiary Columbus Networks Curaçao for international telephony and internet is faced with more delays. According to Telecom-minister Maurice Adriaens (FOL), the international company doesn’t understand why his request that was submitted last year has still not been dealt with.

In order to provide the international financial markets with better services, the financial industry of Curaçao is currently working on the formalization of a new securities exchange. A new securities exchange does not only have domestic benefits for Curaçao but it also makes it possible for Curaçao to provide a broader spectrum of financial services to the international markets than is presently the case.
203 Million euro debt restructuring on an allocation account

“Now that the Order in Council for the Kingdom (AMvRB) Financial Supervision is settled, the Netherlands is keeping her promise by depositing 203 million euro in a Bank of the Netherlands Antilles (BNA) allocation account on behalf of the payment arrears”, says the Dutch finance-minister Wouter Bos (PvdA) in a letter dated November 28 to the Lower House about the 2008 Budget.

Back to prison-term for drug couriers

Drug couriers are sentenced to prison-term again now that their passports may no longer be seized. The Supreme Court decided last week that the ban on travel cannot be imposed, because it is not included in the Antillean legislation. The couriers that had to appear in the every two weeks Hato-session yesterday were therefore given their passports back afterwards.

De financiële crisis raakt de zakelijke dienstverlening. Bij Amerikaanse advocatenkantoren vallen nu al veel ontslagen vanwege teruglopend werk. De verwachte toename van het aantal class actions en andere aansprakelijkheidszaken blijft daarentegen nog even uit.

"Yes we can" zijn de woorden die de verkiezingscampagne van de nieuwe president van de Verenigde Staten van Amerika het best omschrijven. Op 4 november 2008 behaalde hij een historische landslide overwinning in de presidentsverkiezing, en daarmee luidt hij een nieuw tijdperk in. Een tijdperk waarin zelfs het eeuwenlang door racisme geteisterde machtigste land ter wereld koos voor verandering en een betere toekomst, zonder vooroordelen, zonder doorslaggevende betekenis toe te kennen aan de toevallige huidskleur van hun nieuwe president.
MASS LAY-OFF UNDER THE LAWS OF THE DUTCH CARIBBEAN

The termination of the employment contracts of more than 25 employees or of 25% or more of the employees of a company is considered a mass lay-off. For such a mass lay-off permission is required from the Director of the Department of Labor and Social Affairs irrespective of the nature of the company’s activities.

The purpose of the concept-budget 2009 is to retain the regained confidence in Curacao, said Finance-commissioner Mike Willem ((PAR) this morning at the opening of the consideration of the Island-budget 2009. The opposition didn’t agree with Willem’s statement and criticized the concept strongly.

In consultation with the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba as members of the Countries and Territories Overseas of the EU (LGO), the Netherlands has presented them for participation in the European LRIT-datacenter. LRIT is a worldwide identification- and localization system for shipping that is required since 2008.
Caribbean bank to yield £200m after unpaid Vat fraud probe

Financial sleuths acting for British taxpayers have won the legal right to recover an estimated £200m in unpaid Vat which is sitting in a Caribbean bank at the centre of an international fraud inquiry. The decision nine days ago by a judge in the Netherlands Antilles island of Curaçao will affect hundreds of British companies that had set up online accounts with the offshore bank to trade in hi-tech goods.
Shared Central Bank Curaçao and St.Maarten

The new autonomous Caribbean Kingdom countries Curaçao and St.Maarten will get a new, shared central bank and a new currency. This was agreed upon during the political Steering Committee meeting in St.Maarten.
Transferal of state tasks to start in April 2009

The central government, Curaçao and St.Maarten, have signed a list of decisions about the phased dismantling of the Netherlands Antilles and the construction of the new entities. The transferal of state tasks must be implemented by the State Ordinance and can thus only start in April 2009. Curaçao will take over the tasks in three phases: July/August, September and 31 December 2009.

Divi St. Maarten Holding N.V. (“Divi”), the international hotel chain owner and operator had initiated administrative proceedings against the Island Government of St. Maarten, on the basis of damages incurred by Divi as a consequence of the determination by the Island Government as conservation area, of a parcel of land on which Fort Amsterdam, a 400 year old Fort is situated.
