WILLEMSTAD - Naar aanleiding van het feitenonderzoek van de Landsrecherche naar de dood van L.L. Florentina op vrijdag 6 september 2013 omstreeks 23.00 uur maakt de Procureur-generaal het volgende bekend:

THE HAGUE--Attorney-at-law Hendrich Seferina and educator Stanley Hodge have been nominated for the positions of deputy judges at the Joint Court of Justice. Seferina and Hodge were recommended for appointment by Dutch Minister of Security and Justice Ivo Opstelten and will be employed at the Court of First Instance in St. Maarten.

THE HAGUE/MADRID - Standard & Poor's agency cut the Netherlands' credit rating on Friday, reducing the euro zone club of full triple-A nations to just three, while rewarding Spain for efforts to reform its public finances. S&P lowered the Netherlands, which is suffering from an anaemic economy, slumping house prices and falling consumer confidence, to "AA+" from "AAA".

KRALENDIJK - Gezaghebber Lydia Emerencia van Bonaire heeft vanmorgen haar ontslag aangeboden aan minister Plasterk (Binnenlandse Zaken, PvdA). Ze deed dat nadat een meerderheid van de eilandraad dinsdag het vertrouwen in haar had opgezegd.

NETHERLANDS - Nederland is zijn triple-A-status kwijt. Dat heeft kredietbeoordelaar Standard & Poor's (S&P) vrijdag bekendgemaakt. De kredietbeoordelaar heeft zijn oordeel over Nederland neerwaarts bijgesteld van AAA met een negatief vooruitzicht naar AA+ met een stabiele verwachting.

WILLEMSTAD - Van10 t/m 14 maart 2014 organiseren de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen en de Universiteit van de Nederlandse Antillen hun inmiddels traditiegetrouwe PAO-intensief cursussen op  Curaçao.

AMSTERDAM - Spigt Litigators zouden per 1 januari 2014 ophouden zelfstandig te bestaan. De twintig advocaten van het kantoor zouden over gaan naar het (van oorsprong) Amerikaanse advocatenkantoor Greenberg Traurig. Dat melden verschillende bronnen, volgens vakblad Advocatie. Greenberg Traurig en Spigt Litigators onthouden zich vooralsnog van commentaar.

PHILIPSBURG--The Government of St. Maarten must start occupying its new government building within 12 months, the Court of First Instance has ruled. The new building, which was completed in 2008, has largely been empty whilst the government has rented various other buildings from which it has been operating.

PHILIPSBURG - The hearing of the appeals in the Vesuvius case, the largest criminal investigation ever carried out in St. Maarten, kicked off Tuesday morning at Belair Community Centre. The first day of hearings was marked by the three-judge panel meticulously going through the extensive files containing the charges against the convicts, who largely declined to answer questions.

PHILIPSBURG -- Two new members have been appointed to the Constitutional Court by National Decree signed by Governor Eugene Holiday and Justice Minister Dennis Richardson.

Hogan Lovells LLP in Caracas and New York has helped Venezuela’s state-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) issue US$4.5 billion in notes.

Als een Nederlandse bv haar zetel wil verplaatsen naar de Antillen, doet zij er goed aan dit ook duidelijk te maken voor de Belastingdienst. Zo wist een bv, die over drie jaren geen vrijgestelde winst uit Curaçao had opgegeven, niet aannemelijk te maken dat haar vestigingsplaats daadwerkelijk was gewijzigd.

Curaçao and St. Maarten Courts will accept the choice of laws

 

One of the questions frequently asked is whether the Courts in Curaçao or St. Maarten, if an action is brought before them, will pay deference to a “choice of governing law” and/or venue provision in an agreement, in particular when the parties have chosen US Law, and a US Court to resolve their disputes.

PHILIPSBURG - At the request of the chief public prosecutor Wesselink, in consultation with the chief of KPSM, the attorney general Stein of Sint Maarten ordered the “Landsrecherche” (National Detective’s Agency) to conducta criminal investigation involving police officer AM., who is currently not working as police officer.

WILLEMSTAD - Vrijdagavond 6 september 2013 is het levenloze lichaam van L.L. Florentina (27) in één van de cellen van het cellencomplex te Barber ontdekt. Florentina zat tot op dat moment in voorlopige hechtenis in verband met verdenking van betrokkenheid bij de moord op Raul Martinez.
