Doctors face manslaughter charges in death of young girl
- November 01, 2016 9:55 AM
MARIGOT--Paediatrician F.C. and Surgeon P.L. from the Louis-Constant Fleming Hospital face manslaughter charges over the death of a young girl in their care back in 2010, but the judgement will not be given until January 26, 2017.
The case which was heard in court on Thursday, October 27, concerns a three-year-old girl named Bianca who died on March 1, 2010, two and a half days after she was admitted on a Friday suffering from stomach pains and vomiting. Her condition worsened and she died on the Monday morning. The father filed a complaint with the Gendarmerie for “non-assistance to a person in peril.”
The subsequent enquiry into the girl’s death took five years. Three experts concluded that the doctors “misdiagnosed the girl’s condition and made wrong decisions.” According to them, the girl’s condition necessitated an evacuation to Guadeloupe on the Sunday morning, but this did not happen and during the night of Sunday to Monday the girl went into shock and died of a double cardiac arrest.
Vice-Prosecutor Yves Paillard called for a six month suspended prison sentence for the surgeon and an 18-month suspended sentence for the paediatrician.
