Expansion at VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in Bonaire and Curaçao

With attorneys Lorena Navia and Carlos Winkel taking the oath on Tuesday 7 June 2016, both the Bonaire office as well as the Curaçao office of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne have added a sworn attorney to their teams.
 
Lorena started at VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in Bonaire in January and Carlos joined the Curaçao office in March. Both attorneys start in the firm’s Litigation & Commercial section.
 
In 2013, Lorena Navia graduated in corporate law and completed a master’s degree in political science with an International Relations specialization as well. She worked in the field of asylum and migration law and as a legal assistant with the Red Cross on a voluntary basis. Her international view and social commitment strongly influenced her desire to work as an attorney in Bonaire. “As a starting attorney on a small island like Bonaire, you’re interacting with your clients right from the start, and you actually see result of the work you do for them. But not only the small scale here appeals to me. I already learned a lot in a brief period of time, mainly because of the combination of local work and international matters.” Lorena describes being sworn in as a moment to remember. “When you take the oath before the Court of Justice in your robe, you officially become an attorney. And for me, that was the main reason to change course and settle in Bonaire.”
 
Carlos Winkel was born in Curaçao, grew up partly on the island and in the Netherlands, and studied law at Leiden University. He graduated in Dutch Law in 2015, with a specialization in International Maritime and Transportation Law. On taking the oath, Carlos remarks: “For me, this moment is the official start of my career as an attorney and my future in Curaçao. This is what I have aimed for in the past years.” To realize that goal, Carlos gained work experience with international law firm Loyens & Loeff in Amsterdam and interned at VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in Curaçao as a law
student. His ambition to become an attorney in the Caribbean is not a coincidence. “I have always known that I would return to my roots one day. Life in Curaçao is just great. Moreover, VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne offers me the best of both worlds professionally: a broad professional education and a chance to further specialize in maritime and international transportation law in the future. Uitbreiding VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne op Bonaire en Curaçao
 
Met de beëdiging van advocaten Lorena Navia en Carlos Winkel op dinsdag 7 juni 2016, kunnen zowel de Bonairiaanse als de Curaçaose vestiging van VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne een beëdigd advocaat aan hun team toevoegen. Lorena startte in januari bij VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne op Bonaire en Carlos begon in maart op de vestiging te Curaçao. Beide advocaten starten binnen het kantoor in de sectie Litigation & Commercial.
 
Lorena Navia behaalde in 2013 haar master Recht en Onderneming en rondde eveneens de master politicologie af met de specialisatie Internationale Betrekkingen. Ze deed ervaring op in het asiel- en migratierecht en ging op vrijwillige basis aan de slag als juridisch medewerker bij het Rode Kruis. Haar internationale blik en maatschappelijke betrokkenheid speelden een belangrijke rol in haar wens om aan de slag te gaan als advocaat op Bonaire. “Op een klein eiland als Bonaire zit je ook als beginnend advocaat direct met je cliënten om de tafel en zie je concreet resultaat van het werk dat je voor hen verricht. Maar niet alleen de kleinschaligheid spreekt me hier aan. Juist de afwisseling tussen lokaal werk en internationale zaken maken dat ik hier in korte tijd al veel heb geleerd.” Haar beëdiging omschrijft Lorena als een moment om echt even bij stil te staan. “Wanneer je voor het Hof in toga je eed aflegt, word je natuurlijk officieel advocaat en dat was voor mij de belangrijkste reden het roer om te gooien en me te vestigen op Bonaire.”
 
Carlos Winkel is geboren op Curaçao, groeide deels daar en deels in Nederland op studeerde rechten aan de Universiteit van Leiden. Daar behaalde hij in 2015 zijn master civiel recht, met de specialisatie Internationaal Maritiem en Transportrecht. Over zijn beëdiging zegt Carlos: “Dit moment is voor mij het officiële startpunt van mijn loopbaan als advocaat en mijn toekomst op Curaçao. Hier heb ik de afgelopen jaren naartoe gewerkt.” Tijdens zijn studie deed Carlos werkervaring op bij het internationale advocatenkantoor Loyens & Loeff in Amsterdam en liep hij een studentstage bij
VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne op Curaçao. Dat hij een carrière in de Caribische advocatuur ambieert is geen toeval. “Ik wist altijd al dat ik op een zeker moment zou terugkeren naar mijn roots. Het leven op Curaçao is gewoon ontzettend fijn. VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne biedt me daarnaast op professioneel vlak the best of both worlds: een brede opleiding en de mogelijkheid om me in de toekomst verder te specialiseren in het maritiem en internationaal transportrecht.
