School principal questioned, still subject of investigation

PHILIPSBURG - The primary school principal who was questioned, then released on Friday is still the subject of an investigation, Prosecutor’s Office spokesperson Karola van Nie told The Daily Herald on Monday.

Van Nie said the man had been questioned on Friday and then released the same day. She said his house also had been searched.

This newspaper understands that the principal of the school located in Betty’s Estate held an emotional meeting with his staff on Monday and confirmed to them that he had been held and questioned for seven hours. He told his staff that he had been released because there was no evidence to justify holding him further. He said the matter had nothing to do with what was being reported in the media.

The man broke down in tears during the meeting, which led to many staff members also crying. This newspaper understands that many staffers do not believe the allegations levelled against the principal. The principal informed his staff that he would not be in school for a few days as he addressed the matter, and he urged his staff to pray for him.

Van Nie declined to say why the man had been arrested, what he was being investigated for and whether his arrest was based on a complaint filed by a parent(s) of the school.

A school official declined to comment on the matter when asked on Monday.
