Broadening the horizon HRM students of the University of Curaçao Dr. Moises da Costa Gomez are participating in the 2015 annual conference of SHRM

Annually the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) organizes an international conference for HRM professionals and students, where cutting edge HRM theories, tools and experiences
are shared.

Annually up to 60,000 HRM professionals and students from around the globe participate in these events, to gain new cutting edge knowledge and start building their own professional network. This year HRM students of the University of Curaçao will be participating in this annual conference for the first time, during a special part of their curriculum called “Broadening the Horizon”. The main reason is to provide the HRM students with first hand international experience, giving them the opportunity to start building an international network.

One of the main conclusions of the symposium “The current labor market: Challenges and Opportunities” held in January 2015 was that, in general the local market for professionals is slowly saturating and that we should at least reach out to the regional markets.

In our globalizing world, even Curaçao is opening the borders to the international community. The most recent movements the government of Curacao made was opening of the borders to Colombia and initiate closer relationship with China. Opening the borders will offer direct opportunities to our young professionals. This also means our young professionals should be prepared to compete not only on the local labor market, but should also be able to focus on the regional and international markets.

In terms of education and preparation for the labor market this means preparing students not only based on book knowledge and knowledge of the local market, but orienting on the international market and starting early on building an international network capability.

Opening the borders will also give our young professionals the opportunity to capitalize on one of our most important marketable qualities: our languages.

People of Curaçao in general are usually fluent in several languages. An advantage few countries can boast. This gives them an edge on the regional and international labor market.

This program “Broadening the Horizon” which will be supervised by Program Director of HRM Mrs. Liza Chong and lecturer Mr. Luis Rubio, is an integral part of the HRM study at the University of Curaçao and will be hopefully recurring annually. The program was made possible by the department of education and with cooperation of the USONA (Uitvoerende orgaan van de Stichting Ontwikkelingsfonds Nederlandse Antillen - SONA).

Visiting this annual conference is definitely not a pleasure trip. During the program students will be working hard every day, attending conferences and work sessions on new or relatively new subjects. Each and every day new opportunities will arise to work on their international network. Preparation for this international experience was intensive. During the first phase of preparation students had to select the main subject they are going to write a professional paper on, before their return to Curaçao. Besides the main paper, students will have to daily write an article based on the day’s events to keep their cohort staying on the island and their professional peers appraised of their experiences and gained new knowledge.

This international event will also put our students in contact with the international world. For some of the students this will even be a first, visiting a foreign country and attending an international event of this magnitude.

Besides gaining cutting edge knowledge, students will be exposed to the international world of HRM. Broadening their horizon, especially outside of the scope of Curaçao is necessary for the development of professionals capable of functioning not only on a national level, where they will undoubtedly be in contact with that international world, but also making them capable of functioning in settings outside of the country. At the University of Curaçao we believe in preparing our students for the
international market as well as for the local market. Our primary resources in Curaçao are our Human Resources. Preparing students to function locally, regionally and internationally will enhance our local economy.
