Teens to argue blood diamond case in court

PHILIPSBURG--Students of five high schools will try on May 29 to argue their way to an appearance before judges of the International Criminal Court during the week of January 16, 2016.

The St. Maarten Moot Court Foundation, founded by attorney Willem Nelissen, in close cooperation with Lexwell Attorneys at Law, has organized the first SXM Moot Court Competition for high school students to show their skills in the courtroom. That competition will take place in the Courthouse on Friday, May 29, when the school teams will go head to head as the defence and prosecution in mock proceeding in a case involving blood diamonds.

Students will argue their sides of the case based on international criminal law as applied by the International Court of Justice seated in The Hague. The pleadings will be in English as it will be in the international competition.

Three of St. Maarten's sitting judges and two reserve judges will determine the winning team of the competition.

Vying for the title of the best arguers are teams from Learning Unlimited Preparatory School, Caribbean International Academy, Milton Peters College (two teams) and St. Maarten Academy. Each team will comprise three members.

The winning team will head to Peace Palace in The Hague to appear and argue a case in front of judges of the International Court of Justice and other international tribunals stationed in that city. The St. Maarten team will compete against teams from some 18 countries.

Nelissen told The Daily Herald his foundation has been pre-approved by the international competition organizers to enrol a St. Maarten team. The local leg of the competition is to determine that team.

Several legal eagles, including the president of the St. Maarten Court, are assisting the teams as coaches and mentors.

Sponsors are still needed to make the local leg of the competition a success and to support the winning team in its journey to the Peace Palace. For more information on how to assist the competition, visit the foundation's website: www.sxmmootcourt.com.
