Police officer convicted of sex offences to appeal

PHILIPSBURG--A community police officer convicted of sexual offences against two underage girls has appealed his conviction. The Joint Court of Justice will now have to review the case against Juan F.J. Statie.

A court date for the case has been set on January 29, 2015, Solicitor-General Taco Stein confirmed.

Statie was convicted on October 22, and had been in pre-trial detention since February 24. However, as Statie was sentenced to a six-month suspended sentence, as well as 120 hours community service, he was released after sentencing.

Statie was convicted of having sexually abused his stepdaughter over a period of two years, when she was between ages 14 and 17. He also said to have abused a second girl, age 14, who was placed in his care by her mother.

Statie was suspended from St. Maarten Police Force on full pay after the allegation was made against him. The Daily Herald understands that Statie will remain suspended on full pay until his case is finalised.

If Statie's conviction were to be quashed, the Internal Affairs Department will run a separate investigation into Statie's behaviour, which could still lead to the officer losing his job.
