Frans strongly urges Sarah to prepare law on vote buying

PHILIPSBURG--Government is yet to comply with Parliament's motion on regulating campaign paraphernalia and combating vote buying via the drafting of legislation much to the chagrin of independent Member of Parliament (MP) Frans Richardson, the initiator of the motion.

The motion was passed in April during a discussion on the 2013 budget. Richardson has now written to Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams urging her "in the strongest possible terms to comply with the motion" by preparing and submitting to Parliament the necessary legislation. The letter was sent to the Prime Minister on Thursday via the President of Parliament.
"We are now less than a year before the next election and to date Parliament has not received the requested draft legislation. It is simply unacceptable that Parliament passes a motion and government refuses to follow up," the MP stated in his letter.
He explained that by "removing the temptation to compete based on how much money a candidate can afford to funnel to voters to influence their vote, we level the playing field. It is a matter of fairness."

Candidates without the resources "simply cannot compete, regardless of how qualified they are. This is fundamentally unfair and undemocratic."

Richardson sees the legislation as being beneficial to all political parties. "Freed from the need to constantly fend off requests for money and goods from voters, political parties can dedicate themselves to focusing on issues that really affect the welfare of voters."

Richardson now awaits a response from the Prime Minister.
