Government explores possible court for small claims

PHILIPSBURG--Government is exploring the possibility of establishing a Small Claims Court for St. Maarten, Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams announced on Friday.

 
"Within the context of the Kingdom, we are exploring the possibilities to have cases which are more of a smaller civil nature be handled by a Small Claims Court.
 
"Given that sometimes there is a large burden put on our Court system by these smaller cases, we are exploring how we can establish a Small Claims Court or take some of these smaller issues and see if somehow we can institute such a Court or hearing which would take a burden off of the Court system we are familiar with.
 
"We are looking at how to develop that and put that in place," Wescot-Williams was quoted as saying in a press release issued by her Cabinet on Sunday.
 
"Ever since we were preparing our Justice system for country St. Maarten, it was clear we would have to stick within the context of the Kingdom where our Court system is concerned – the Court of First Instance, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court," she added.
