Government has 120 days to draft beach protection ordinance

PHILIPSBURG--Government has been instructed by Parliament to draft and present for approval a "Beach Protection Ordinance" within 120 days or receiving notification from the legislature.

 
A motion to this effect was tabled by independent Member of Parliament Romain Laville at the end of the debate on the 2013 budget last week. The motion, supported by the coalition MPs, was adopted by Parliament.
 
The ordinance must include the principles and regulations outlined in the existing Beach Policy of government and set additional regulations "aimed at protecting the recreational, ecological and natural values of St. Maarten's beaches."
The ordinance should also provide for "securing unrestricted and unobstructed public access [to the beaches .Ed] and ample parking spaces."
 
Before government can begin its work on the ordinance, it first has to be forwarded by Parliament and booked in government's administration. The motion was approved on April 17.
