PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten has become the first country in the kingdom to ratify the coronation regulations ahead of the abdication of Queen Beatrix and the coronation of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander as king on April 30.
The national ordinance enacting changes to nine other ordinances was adopted swiftly by Parliament during a special plenary session on March 12. Following that meeting, government ratified the national ordinance on March 14 and it was promulgated on Monday. With this publication, government assures that the national ordinance can enter into force on April 30.
Government also drafted a national decree containing general measures and a ministerial regulation related to the coronation. Those regulations also were ratified on March 14 and will enter into force on the day of the coronation.
Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams said, "It would not have been possible to draft and finish these regulations within the 6½ weeks which it took to actually do so," without the help of the Advisory Council, Parliament and the Governor's Cabinet.
The regulations are under review by the Ombudsman who has an allotted six weeks to conduct due diligence by the Constitution.
