Petition for constitutional referendum on Statia
- February 26, 2013 10:20 PM
More than 300 persons in St. Eustatius have thus far signed the petition drafted by Brighter Path Foundation, Statia Roots Foundation and St. Eustatius Awareness and Development Movement calling for a referendum on the island’s constitutional status.
The three organisations want voters to have their say about the island’s current status as special entity of The Netherlands, prior to the planned evaluation in 2015. The petition can be signed at Lynn’s Bakery and Peso’s supermarket, as well as online. On Sunday, 108 supporters had signed the online petition at website www.change.org.
The petition raised some strong emotions; it can be read on the Website. “The rights of a people to determine their constitutional and political path were gained through blood, sweat and tears, and in many cases the ultimate sacrifice: life. These rights should never be surrendered or taken away,” Gene Herbert wrote. “We, the people of St. Eustatius, should be able to have a say in deciding what is best for the future of our beloved Golden Rock,” stated Joan Cuvalay.
