WILLEMSTAD — Last year the Public Prosecutor collected over 800,000 guilders on (traffic) fines and transactions, said Minster of Justice, Nelson Navarro (Pais), this week in reply to written questions from the PAR-fraction.
The 841,352 guilders exceeds the 527,363 guilders received in 2011 with over 300,000 guilders. The money will be deposited in the Crime fund, which is meant to finance prevention of juvenile crime projects.
In 2010, the Public Prosecutor collected 872,824 guilders. Undoubtedly, the introduction of Paga bo which was implemented in 2009 especially to collect fines, contributed toward this, but there were quite a few bottlenecks with the implementation afterwards.
In the annual report on 2011 the Public Prosecutor reports that a special supportive team was appointed to clear the arrears of the traffic session from 2009 to 2011 and the Paga bo But-file to collect as many overdue fines as possible. Many summonses were returned because the address was incorrect or the person in question had moved. Reactions were also received from violators who had already paid the transaction but had still received a notice. According to the annual report, the fine-collecting department was to function optimally in 2012.
In 2011, 14 percent of the written Summons Process-Verbal (OPV’s) was settled at the session; 1881 of the OPV’s were dismissed. An amount of 266,854 guilders was collected on transactions.
