Louie Laveist’s retrial delayed until October

PHILIPSBURG - The retrial of former commissioner and current National Alliance (NA) Member of Parliament (MP) Louie Laveist on bribery charges, which was scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed until 3 October.
Laveist's legal representative in Court Attorney Jason Rogers of Gibson and Associates requested that the three judges of the Court of Appeal postpone the hearing on grounds that his case dossier was not complete with necessary documentation to properly represent his client. Rogers took over as Laveist's lawyer in February.
The Appeals Court found Laveist guilty in February 2010 of two counts of bribery as a civil servant, for which he was given a suspended prison sentence of six months with three years' probation, payment of a NAf.-5,000 fine or 55 days in jail, and a ban from civil service for three years. He was acquitted of forgery and fraud.
Laveist launched an appeal with the High Court in The Hague, which referred the case back for retrial, because of an administrative error. The High Court declared Laveist's conviction null and void, because the evidence leading to his conviction had not been included in the judgment.
