Opinion: Food for tax attorneys

The proposals to reform the tax system, as revealed by outgoing Finance Minister Shigemoto on Wednesday contains good news, bad new and questionable news.


The questionable part piqued our interest, because the new tax system seems to be heading for the creation of two classes of citizens: residents and non-residents.
 A non-resident could for instance be someone who works in Dutch St. Maarten and resides on the French side. These citizens will not be confronted with higher taxes than their brethren who stay on this side of the border.
 We wonder about the legality of making such a distinction, given the fact that our country’s state regulation prohibits discrimination on any grounds.
That smells like food for politicians, and further down the road, probably also like excellent food for tax attorneys.
