Louie Laveist's retrial postponed until May

PHILIPSBURG--The retrial of former commissioner and current National Alliance (NA) Member of Parliament (MP) Louie Laveist on bribery charges, which was scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed until May 24.
Laveist changed lawyers earlier this month. His new legal representative in Court, Attorney Jason Rogers of Gibson and Associates, requested that the three judges of the Court of Appeal postpone the hearing. He said he had not received all legal documents concerning the case from Laveist's previous lawyer.
The Court of Appeal granted the request and rescheduled the retrial hearing for May 24.
In February 2010, the Appeals Court had found Laveist guilty of two counts of bribery as a civil servant, for which he was given a suspended prison sentence of six months with three years' probation, payment of a NAf. 5,000 fine or 55 days in jail, and a ban from civil service for three years. He was acquitted of forgery and fraud.
Laveist had launched an appeal with the High Court in The Hague, which referred the case back for retrial because of an administrative error. The High Court declared Laveist's conviction null and void because the evidence leading to his conviction was not included in the judgement.
