"Braam arrested for ancient case"

The arrest of lawyer Bertie Braam last Sunday has nothing to do with practicing the legal profession but is related to extending managerial services as corporate director for a third party.
The investigation is focused on facts going back to approximately fifteen years, says Braams’ attorney Chris Leujeuz in a short reaction to the arrest.
The examining magistrate on Aruba determined further detention of Braam yesterday. The Public Prosecutor is interrogating him in connection with the suspicion of helping with money laundering. We await the outcome of the investigation with confidence, says Lejuez. Lawyer Braam was arrested because he is also corporate director of an offshore company operating on Aruba.
Justice had interrogated Braam before, namely in the mid nineties, but that regarded the case of former MAN deputy Benny de Mei of Telecommunication, who eventually was sentenced owing to corruption. One of the projects was the privatization of operating the network for wireless telephones, which involved the so-called Fabela-group from the US. That sale never went through and an attempt from the Fabela-group on Aruba also foundered, according to the Volkskrant in an article of March 15th 1997. Braam was not prosecuted in that case.
