The 36-year old man suspected of throwing the stone which seriously wounded the 33 year old Carlos Moreno on the 26th of June has been arrested this morning at his home. The incident happened during riots in the Nieuwestraat street in Pietermaai, at the Café ‘De Nachtwacht’.
The suspect J.C.E.F. has been arrested on the account of attempted murder and public violence resulting in serious physical injury. Apart from the arrest in Buena Vista, two raids were also held on the Margaritaweg street 11 (Welatina) and the Kaya Barbulètè 111 (Seru Mahuma). Whether or not something was confiscated was not revealed this morning by the press officer of the justice department. It is not ruled out that more arrests pertaining to the case will follow. The suspect had already been interrogated by the police this morning. The identity of his lawyer is unknown.
According to the police the arrest was made by members of the Atrako Team. This is peculiar, as this team is usually meant to solve looting raids. The Criminal Investigation Department was also involved in the investigation of the riots in the Nieuwestraat street. Directly after the riots a large team was put on the case. Witnesses were questioned. Also a video recording of the demonstration in front of the Island Council building was made by the Justice Department on that particular day. That demonstration was aimed against the approval of the order in council for the Kingdom’s financial supervision.
After the approval which took place around eleven o’clock in the evening, a small group of demonstrators split off to the ‘De Nachtwacht’ where they let off their frustrations on the Dutch interns and customers mainly present. Stones were thrown, rallying cries were blurted out and a car was toppled over.
On the run
At the sight of the group of demonstrators, some 50 of the café’s clients ran off, according to the authorities. One of the customers was Carlos Moreno, a white skin colored Yu’I Kòrsou who was hit on the back of his head with a stone. He suffered a fractured skull and a severe concussion and was hospitalized for several weeks. He doesn’t remember anything of the incident anymore.
