The Faculty of Social Sciences and Economics presents a public lecture entitled:
Crime Theories, the Psychology of Criminal Behaviour,
and School Violence on Curaçao
Speaker: Mark A. Hawkins, Ph.D.
In his talk Dr. Hawkins will first review the most influential theories of crime and provide insights into what is known about the psychology of juvenile delinquency and adult criminal behaviour. Dr. Hawkins will also present the results of a esearch
study conducted at UNA investigating students’ opinion about school violence.
Dr. Hawkins is Director of Research and Associate Professor of Research in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Economics at UNA. The topic of his doctoral dissertation was criminal rehabilitation and in 1994-1995 he spent eight months on Curaçao as one of the investigators in a research study on the rehabilitative effects of meditation in the prison Bon Futuro. After receiving his doctoral degree in 1998, Dr. Hawkins returned to Curaçao for two years to conduct research in a project on the prevention of juvenile delinquency. He has been a resident of Curaçao since 2002.
Dr. Hawkins has published articles on crime and criminal rehabilitation in the Caribbean Journal of Criminology and Social Psychology, the Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, Criminal Behavior and Mental Health, and the Journal of Social
Behavior and Personality.
