Businessman Corallo files complaint against Curacao news blog

PHILIPSBURG -- Controversial Atlantis World Group owner Francesco Corallo has hired well-known Amsterdam lawyer Gerard Spong to file a legal complaint in the Netherlands against Curaçao-based news blog Knipselkrant.

In the Dutch-language blogs, Corallo has been repeatedly described as a friend of the Italian "mob." According to Spong, this constitutes libel and is also a failure to respect the privacy of his client.

It appears that Spong has submitted a request to initiate criminal proceedings in Rotterdam against Knipselkrant's editor-in-chief Nicolaas Herders and Internet provider Hosting Concepts.

Last week, the Prosecutor's Office in Willemstad had rejected a similar request by attorneys Eldon "Peppie" Sulvaran and Chester Peterson. These two lawyers felt that Knipselkrant had wrongly associated them with mafia practices. Corallo and MFK leader Gerrit Schotte are their clients, but the prosecution saw no reason to proceed with the prosecution.

A few days later, Rotterdam's Chief Prosecutor Marc van Nimwegen received a formal complaint from Spong. The complaint is about Knipselkrant's blogs detailing how the Italian by birth and holder of Dutch nationality, has been trying to obtain a banking licence since 2005, to launder tens of billions of illegal money.

In 2013, Corallo started a court case against the Dutch State. He demanded rectification of a statement by the Dutch Embassy in Italy in which he was described as an important person within the Sicilian mafia.

According to Corallo, this information was incorrect and the Netherlands should have verified this. However, the Court disagreed, because the Dutch embassy had no reason to doubt the correctness of the information as it was provided by the Italian government.

Atlantis World Group includes casinos in Curaçao, the Dominican Republic, and Atlantis World Casino, Beach Plaza Casino and Paradise Plaza Casino in St. Maarten.
