Jamaloodin in detention for eight more days

WILLEMSTAD — This afternoon, the detention of former Finance Minister George Jamaloodinwas prolonged by the investigating judge for eight more days, starting tomorrow.

The MFK-prominent is currently 'in restriction’ and should, for the time being and as a result of the restrictive measures imposed, have no contact with the outside world, except for his lawyers and probation officers. This was confirmed bythe spokesman of the Public Prosecutor, GuilanoSchoop.

The suspect is not allowed to make phone calls, cannot have access to newspapers, television or radios, and isalso not permitted to have contact with relatives or fellow detainees.

Limitations are designed to prevent a suspect from counteracting orinfluencing an investigation. The late Luigi 'Pretu' Florentina, one of the principals in addition to the accused Burney 'Nini' F., was also submitted to restrictive measures when he was locked up in a cell at the naval barracks at Suffisant.

The Public Prosecutor’s office this morning considered the extension of the detention of Jamaloodin necessary and later in the day, he appeared before the investigating judge. The judge put the legality of the arrest and the detention of the suspect to the test and ordered the extension of his detention.

Jamaloodin was arrested at his apartment in Seru Lora Estate early yesterday morning in connection with the Maximus investigation. The man has been identified as one of the intellectual perpetrators behind the murder of HelminWiels on the beach at Marie Pampoen on May 5th last year.

"At the request of the public prosecutor and led by two investigating judges, a number of house searches have taken place," the office of the Public Prosecutor confirmed in the press release.

"Searches of the apartment where G.R.M.J. was detained took place and of two houses located in, respectively, Steenrijk and SteenenKoraal. House searches were also carried out at a hotel in the city center and a commercial building in Saliña. At several of these properties, objects which may be of interest to the investigation were confiscated."

In the interest of the investigation, the office of the Public Prosecutorwould not give any further announcements at this time. It is still unclear what objects were seized.
