PHILIPSBURG--A 56-year-old man was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months for the attempted smuggling of eleven persons from Cuba and the Dominican Republic into St. Maarten on July 17.
Following the Prosecutor's demand, the court also ordered the confiscation of the vessel Lady Gina which was used in the illegal operation.
Prosecutor Tineke Kamps had asked the court to sentence Cobert McElroy Jeffrey to two years.
The Antiguan claimed he was innocent. He stated he was to transport his passengers from Antigua to Barbuda against payment of US $50 per person, during the October 24 hearing of his case.
The captain claimed he had fallen asleep behind the ship's wheel. When he woke up he didn't know where he was, Jeffrey had said.
He immediately found the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard on his tail and was arrested. He refuted statements provided by his passengers that they were to sail to the US Virgin Islands.
