Robber of Caribbean Gems sent to prison for three years

PHILIPSBURG--The 20-year-old man held responsible for the armed robbery of Caribbean Gems jewellery store on Front Street on December 5, 2016, was sentenced Wednesday to three years.
 
In following the Prosecutor’s demand Anthony N. Fisher was sentenced to 48 months in prison, 12 of which were to be suspended, on three years’ probation, and mandatory Parole Board Guidance.
 
Fisher confessed he had threatened employees under threat of a flare gun and made away with more than 100 necklaces and pendants. He, however, did not get very far as he was apprehended by a member of the Volunteer Corps of St. Maarten VKS.
 
On Wednesday, the defendant, who was convicted in 2012 of possession of a firearm, said he was sorry for what he had done. “I did not mean to do it, but I had no other choice. I asked for help and for a job, but no one hired me.” Fisher said he had been under a lot of stress because he had no money to pay the rent, while his girlfriend was pregnant.
 
He stressed that the flare gun was empty and that he did not mean to harm anybody, but he nevertheless caused a lot of stress and fear among the store’s personnel.
 
Asked about the teardrop tattoo under one of his eyes, the defendant denied this meant that he was a killer or a gang member. Instead, he said he had gotten the tattoo in memory of a close friend who had passed away.
 
Prosecutor Nanouk Lemmers said the persons in the store had feared for their lives when the school dropout stormed inside.
Attorney Geert Hatzmann totally disagreed with the Prosecutor’s demand and said his client would learn nothing from spending four years in prison. Instead, he suggested a sentence of 365 days, 286 of which were to be suspended, on three years’ probation, and 240 hours of community service.
 
According to the Judge the lawyer’s suggestion was quite unrealistic as armed robbery suspects deserve more than a mere slap on the wrist. Therefore, the defendant was sentenced according to the Prosecutor’s demand.
