Concern in US over integrity on Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD - The US is concerned about the constant accusations of corruption aimed at the Government of Curaçao.
These allegations, which the State Department indicates are "still not resolved," could eventually have a negative effect on combating drug trafficking in the region.
The recently published "International Narcotics Control Strategy Report" says that none of the islands of the so-called Dutch Caribbean can be blamed for encouraging or facilitating production of illegal drugs or money laundering of the proceeds.
However, several improvements should be implemented. For example, the police force is to implement a better "screening" of recruits for the various law enforcement services, especially for high positions.
The State Department is concerned about the constant imputations of corruption towards the current government, according to the report.
"For some time now, the Curaçao Government has been struggling with constant public accusations of corruption, which provoked an inquiry by a Dutch inquirer, resulting in the Rosenmöller report, which indicated possible misdeeds by several members of the cabinet. Despite the call from the Dutch Government to investigate these matters, the Curaçao Government refuses to conduct an in-depth investigation. It is unknown when these matters will be resolved," according to the report.
There is also concern about the lack of leadership within the Curaçao Police Force. The fact that the police have lacked a commander since 10-10-10 has a demoralising effect.
For that matter, the State Department is very pleased about the level of cooperation between the various entities responsible for drug combating in the Caribbean area.
