Judge Johannes Romke Sijmonsma from Maastricht returns to the Netherlands Antilles. He starts effective December 1, as member of the Joint Court of Justice of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.

The Minister Council for the Kingdom has agreed today with the Order in Council for the Kingdom (AMvRB) that arranges the provisional financial supervision for the Netherlands Antilles, Curacao, and St. Maarten in the transition period.
Parliament agrees on prohibiting child pornography

Parliament has approved the amendment of the Criminal Code of the Netherlands Antilles this morning, which would officially prohibit child pornography. This is a private member’s bill of former Parliament-member and current Minister Omayra Leeflang (Public health and Social Development, PAR).
Budget 2009 meets standards debt restructuring

The draft-budget of the island territory of Curacao for 2009, shows a deficit of 15 million guilders. This budget meets the standards agreed with the Netherlands to qualify for the debt restructuring as included in the order in Council for the Kingdom (AMvRB) Financial Supervision.
Agreement on consensus-statutory law Police

The common service, part of the consensus-statutory law Police, was for months an obstacle in the negotiations between the island territories Curacao and St. Maarten, the Netherlands Antilles, and the Netherlands. Yet, an agreement was reached on this yesterday evening.
CAP wins case

Airport company Curaçao Airport Partners (“CAP”) is allowed to ask the airlines a fee for the use of the facilities at Hato. But because a regulatory board has not yet been established, the Court wishes to be informed by an expert about the amount of the fee. This is the outcome of legal proceedings of CAiP against American Airlines, KLM, DAE, Air Jamaica, SLM, Avior, Divi Divi, and TUI Airlines (ArkeFly). Judge Van der Bunt rendered the judgment this week.
Economic situation inquiry: 75 Percent of businesses expects to make profit

From the results of the 9th economic situation inquiry conducted in June by the Central Bureau for Statistics in Curacao, Bonaire, and St. Maarten, it appears that more than 75 percent of the businesses (76 percent) expects to make profit in 2008.

The University of the Dutch Caribbean (UDC) and the Governance University (GU) Nederland are organizing The Week of Corporate Governance. After a Master-class Corporate Governance in May and June of this year, UDC, GU Nederland, and Key Corporate decided to hold the Week of Corporate Governance from October 13 until 17.

“Sometimes, criticism can lead to pioneering results. The justice system nowadays would have been very different if it hadn't had, because concepts like slavery, discrimination, death penalty, or euthanasia that were once considered as normal, were abandoned due to pure criticism”, said vice-chairman Chester Peterson in a speech he delivered on behalf of president of the Bar Association Eric de Vries, who was unable to attend the appointment of three new judges last week.

Paternity law at Advisory Council

The proposal for a bill which could amongst others lead to a judicial declaration of paternity, has been accepted and passed on for advice to the Advisory Council (RvA) by the Council of Ministers (RvM) of the Antilles. As soon as the advice is in, the bill can be sent to Parliament for consideration. Once the bill is passed by Parliament, the law can be promulgated and children will have extra protection for their rights.
